It’s that time of year again — when the air feels crisp, the days are shorter, and the sunshine seems to disappear. Add in the time change, and it’s easy to see why so many of us start feeling a little gloomy.
But don’t worry — you’re not alone, and you don’t have to let the winter blues take over. Here are 10 simple ways to lift your mood and bring back your spark this winter.
1. Get Moving
The fastest way to boost your mood is to move your body! Exercise releases endorphins — your brain’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. You don’t need to run a marathon; even a short walk, light jog, or a 10-minute dance session can make a big difference.
2. Take Your Vitamin D
Low sunlight means lower vitamin D levels, which can affect your mood. Consider taking a vitamin D supplement or a quality multivitamin (but always check with your doctor first). You can also boost your intake with vitamin D–rich foods like salmon, eggs, and fortified milk.
3. Start a Gratitude Journal
Practicing gratitude helps shift your focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right. You don’t need a fancy notebook — just use the Notes app on your phone and write down three things you’re grateful for each day. Over time, you’ll start seeing the good in everything.
4. Stay Connected
Winter can make us want to hibernate, but this is the time you need connection the most. Schedule a coffee date with friends, call a loved one, or even join a small group. If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, this is a great time to begin.
5. Stick to a Sleep Schedule
As tempting as it is to binge-watch your favorite shows until midnight, consistent sleep helps regulate your mood and energy. Create a bedtime routine you love — maybe reading a book, turning off your phone an hour before bed, or sipping a calming tea. Aim for 7–8 hours of rest each night.
6. Warm Up from the Inside
There’s something cozy about holding a warm mug of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. Herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, or ginger are great for calming the mind and body. Plus, they help keep you hydrated during the dry winter months.
7. Elevate Your Space with Scents
Your sense of smell can instantly affect your mood. Use an essential oil diffuser with uplifting scents like citrus, peppermint, or eucalyptus. You can also try body washes or perfumes with bright, energizing notes. (Confession: I’ve never been a lavender fan — anyone else?)
8. Nourish Your Skin
Dry air can leave your skin dull and dehydrated. Winter skincare should focus on hydration — think serums with hyaluronic acid and a rich moisturizer to lock in moisture. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water; hydration starts from within!
9. Watch Feel-Good Shows
Sometimes, you just need a cozy night in with your favorite comfort shows or Christmas movies. Familiar, feel-good entertainment can bring back happy memories and help lift your mood.
10. Spend Time with Jesus
Above all, take time each day to connect with God. Prayer, worship, or simply quiet reflection can bring peace and perspective. When you give your worries to Him, He handles what you can’t.
