Vacation Prep for Moms: How I Keep Things Running While I’m Away

Vacation is meant to be a time to rest, reset, and recharge—but if you’re a mom, you know peace doesn’t just magically happen. Most of the time, it’s created before you ever board the plane.
As I was preparing to catch another flight, my goal was simple: make sure my family didn’t miss a beat while I was out of town. Not because I’m a “super mom,” but because routines matter—and a little planning goes a long way.
Here’s what vacation prep looks like in my house.
I start with myself: packing my bags
Before I do anything else, I pack my bags. Outfits planned, essentials accounted for, and travel details confirmed. Getting this done first clears mental space so I can focus on everyone else without feeling rushed or scattered.
Groceries and meal prep = less stress
Meals are one of the biggest disruptions when mom is out of town. To keep things simple, I order groceries and prep meals ahead of time—mainly lunches and dinners that are easy, familiar, and require minimal thought.
Breakfast? That one’s on my husband. He’ll figure it out 😅.
Haircuts for the men
Timing matters. If haircuts are due, they happen before I leave. It’s one less thing added to the week and helps everyone feel put together without extra effort.
A little vacation maintenance for me
This part matters too. Hair and nails aren’t about vanity—they help me feel finished and relaxed so I can actually enjoy my time away. When you feel cared for, it’s easier to rest.
Organizing clothes and daily logistics
I organize the boys’ school clothes and prep my husband’s lunches and dinners. Clear systems reduce friction. When everyone knows where things are and what’s expected, the household runs smoothly—even without me being physically present.
Honoring the village
None of this works without support. A special shoutout to the resident grandmas for holding down the house alongside my husband. Having help doesn’t mean you’re incapable—it means you’re wise enough to accept it.
The bigger picture
This routine isn’t about perfection or control. It’s about creating systems that support your family and give you permission to step away without guilt. When things are prepared, everyone benefits—and vacation actually feels like vacation.
