Happy 2024 🎉🎉🎉. I pray this year brings you closer to achieving your dreams. Like many of us, we are hopeful and have many plans and goals for the year. People set goals and make resolutions with good intentions, but without action the New Year will go the same way previous years have gone.
A goal without a plan is a wish, it might come to pass or not. Goals are not a one-time-set-it-and-forget it type of thing. You have to be intentional about your goals, you have to create habits and systems to ensure that your goals are achieved.
I have been setting yearly goals for almost a decade now. I have learned a few things along the way, and I will be sharing some tips that have helped me over the years.
BE AS DETAILED AS POSSIBLE: This is the part where a lot of people get lost in the sauce. When creating a goal be as detailed as possible. Don’t be vague, write down all the steps that will enable you get to your goal. For example: If you want to lose weight, don’t just write “I want to loose weight in 2024”. This is how I will write the goal. “ I want to loose 24 pounds by the end of 2024” to take it a step further, I will divide the total amount of weight by the 12 ( months of the year). So I will say “ I will loose 2 pounds per month to achieve my goal. If you compare the statements above, which one looks attainable? It's the same goal but with a different approach.
WRITE DOWN THE STEPS. The book of Habakkuk 2:2-3 states "Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." This is where a vision board comes in. Write out all the steps needed to achieve the goals you set . There is something about visualizing your goals.
SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS. It sounds simple but it works. Remove any obstacles standing between you and your goals . For example: If you want to eat healthy make the unhealthy food hard to reach. Also, if you plan on working out pick your gym outfit the night before.
BE ACCOUNTABLE. I can not stress this enough. Being acccountable will help you achieve your goal faster. I have been on my fitness journey for almost a decade now and I call tell you that there is a difference every time I work with a coach. If I don't get my workout in for a whole week, I know my coach will check in with me to make sure I am okay. If you set a financial goal, you can tell your partner about it so they can hold you accountable.
MOTIVATION IS OVERRATED. I said it! You can't rely on motivation alone to achieve your goal. You have to cultivate a habit of discipline. You have to practice delayed gratification, giving up what you want now for what you want most. It is saying no to that sale so you can fund your sinking fund for a predetermined future expense. Discipline needs to become your new best friend on the road to achieving your goals.
Those are the tips that have helped me achieve my yearly goal, I hope your find them useful.
Question of the day: Do you have a yearly vision board ? Please commment below this post.
Until next time, remember you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
